To whom do you trust your home’s health?

By Steven G. Rush

There are a lot of shysters in my field of endeavor…..“certified” inspectors and/or consultants who spent a couple of hours on-line and pay a few bucks to become “certified”.

Beware.  The integrity of your structure and possibly the health of you and your family is at risk if you listen to the wrong person!

Here are the five things you should look for in an Environmental Inspector and Consultant:

1.       The right background.  This is a fairly new field, so finding someone with a degree in Environmental Inspections or consulting is virtually impossible.  But look for someone with a strong science background (especially biology and chemistry).

2.       The person should also have a good understanding of buildings.  Someone versed in Building Science is a big plus!

3.       Several years of experience, or working with or for someone who is experienced and will review their work.

4.       Preferably certified by the American Council for Accredited Certification.  Another option is a Certified Industrial Hygienist who has experience working in homes, not just industrial settings.

5.       A good communicator.  If things get sticky, the person you hire may need to talk with your doctor, your builder, your architect, and maybe your lawyer.  If it gets really sticky, they may need to testify in court.  You need someone who can express themselves well and can hold their own.

Steven G.
