This month we celebrate twenty years of Business Forums! Two decades of bringing decision makers together with experts on new ideas, products, services and technologies. I shudder to think how many lunches I have had in that time, or how many chocolate desserts I have sampled and judged.
And what a different world it is today. Our first luncheon was talking about the "new" Global Economy and how the "new" technologies would affect it. At the time we all thought we were being prophetic on the borderline of Science Fiction; now we can look back and see we were naive and well under-estimated what we were predicting "might" happen. But then who would have expected the paradigm shifts we were about to experience, and who could have foreseen the change they would bring to our world?
Back in 1982 we were talking of a forum with a membership of dozens, operating in Los Angeles and holding our "forum lunch" every three months - now we have subscribers from Namibia to China, from the Czech Republic to India - and forums taking place from the Seattle to San Diego - and our database of contacts tops 100,000 (and that after severe pruning to control the endeavor) and everyday thousands log onto our web site!
As I have said so many times, God only knows how I have had the good fortune to spend the last twenty years doing what I do to pay the rent and live my life. How many people can say that they are paid to have lunch with and be able to listen to the sharing of opinions and concerns of, the people who control the destiny of the greatest economy the Earth has ever known? If that is not luck, what ever could be?
