Letter
from the President
John Hathaway-Bates
President & Executive Director
Please Note: The "Letter from the President" evolved in
2001 from "Tomorrow's
News" that we had previously published in The Business Forum Calendar & Update
since 1984. It started out as a simple way for me to convey the benefits from
conversations I have with leaders in Government, Academia and Business and
potential problems that I learn about during my occupation as a Moderator of
Think Groups for The Business Forum. However, since we began publishing
on-line it has over the years become a personal "Bantering" from someone (me)
surrounded day by day in the endeavor of Change. Usually it is whimsical in
nature, and nothing more than my viewpoints on what I see happening around
me on a daily basis. The "Letter from the
President" therefore, has little to do anymore with The Business Forum, it is just
me sharing my thoughts and ideas with anyone who cares to read
them. Please feel free to publish it or pass it on.
Over the years many people have
asked me why I did not share a potential “new idea”, or new start up company
that I learned about in the meetings I hold each month up and down the West
Coast with them as an opportunity. To be honest, most of time I just did
not want to get in the business of giving investment advice, or introducing
any new ideas, (except when we do it through a Business Forum Luncheon),
where I could be “held responsible” if what I believed was the next
breakthrough technology or service turned out not to do as well as I
expected.
We even put out our disclaimer on
every page of our web site:
The Business Forum, its Officers, partners, and
all other
parties with which it deals, or is associated with, accept
absolutely no responsibility whatsoever, nor any liability,
for what is published on this web site. Please refer to:

But occasionally something comes
along that we are not going to organize a Business Forum Luncheon on any time soon, or I
come across something which cannot easily be adapted to our format. For
example:
The First Good Idea I have heard
lately
I had lunch with an old friend the
other day who explained to me a way that he could take a company’s email
data base of clients, or people who had contacted them by email for customer
service, coupons or special offers and turn it into a Turn Key profit center
for them. You always own the data base and his organization sets up,
operates and manages everything so that the client does not have to hire staff, train
them, etc., etc.
Obviously I suggested that he
should do a series of Business Forums, but he explained to me that his
system only applied to large organizations, with a relatively large email
data base and a well recognized product – he also said that the type of
product, or product line or service,
or a subject of general interest (i.e., a professional association), was
unimportant, just so long as it was well known in the Marketplace.
As most of you know I have sat in
on some of the highest level e-Commerce discussions over the last dozen years
or so, and with some of the leaders in the field – and having seen what he
can do, and how he does it, I can understand how it is something that takes
between half an hour to an hour for him to explain so that people can
understand, and then needs to be custom designed to the individual
operation.
The concept is simple in essence
(even though it has taken him years to perfect) and anything that adds profit to
your bottom line – almost instantaneously without all the management and set
up needs, should appeal to many of my friends, members and supporters.
If you want to know more (and this
was the only way I could get it to you) send me the following information
and mark it MARKETING and I will pass it on to him:
Your Name: Your Title:
Your Company: Address, City, State & Zip Code: Telephone & Email Address:
Then you can hear him out and see
if you agree with me or not.
Second Good Idea I have heard
lately:
For all of you who have over the
years asked me why I did not tell you about some of the great start-ups we
worked with in “closed meetings”, (many of which are now
multi-national operations and household names, a chap I have known for a few years bought
me lunch about a week ago and asked me if I wanted to invest in his new
venture – and I have problems in investing in vacations to be with those of
my children that I still talking to these days! But I think he has
something that many of you will complain I did not tell you about in the
years to come – so here goes.
The technology was initially
created to send 3D animated characters and 3D objects to any web browser in
real time over a 56K modem. It also provides considerable interactivity
between the user (viewer) and the character or object. This allows for
information to be translated in any language through the use of characters
to entertain and provide interactivity.
It also allows useful tools to
view and manipulate objects such as items for purchase from any angle, and
change elements such as color or accessories, and test that item through
simulation prior to purchase. Most recently, the technology has served well
in web based training of persons of various skills in the automotive
industry where, as an example, mechanics can practice maintenance of
automobile parts that simulate real world function.
As the technology has further
developed, it now is capable of intelligently sending any data or
information much more efficient than other existing technologies in use
today. It is capable of streaming 3D characters, 3D objects, video, music,
and any other data and information to mobile devices such as cell phones and
PDAs.
I have seen it and trust me; it is
revolutionary and just about indispensable to my mind for anyone wanting to
build web sites training anyone from surgeons to mechanics - or if you
want to sellanything over the Internet – you just have to see this.
They are looking for investors
right now. But understand you will be talking to someone with the credits of
producing some of the first digital effects for films such as Seven, Mortal Kombat, Mission Impossible, and Twister to name a few. I should also
mention Matrix and Lord of the Rings while I am at it I guess.
Again, just mention ANIMATION and
send me:
Your Name: Your Title:
Your Company: Address, City, State & Zip Code: Telephone & Email Address:
So now no one can ever tell me again
I never give you the heads-up on what I think is the money maker of the
future. But remember – I take no responsibility whatsoever if it
is not!
